A BIT OF PERSPECTIVE.....
If you woke up this morning with more health
than illness, you are more blessed than the millions who will not survive
this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle,
the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation,
you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you can attend a church meeting without fear
of harrassment, arrest, torture or death, you are more blessed than 3 billion
people in the world.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes
on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than
75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet,
and spare change in a dish somewhere, you are among the top 8% of the world's
wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still married,
you are very rare, even in the United States.
If you hold up your head with a smile on your
face and are truly thankful, you are blessed, because the majority can
but most do not.
If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even
touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer a healing
touch.
If you can read this message, you are more blessed
than over 2 billion people in the world that cannot read at all.
--Have a happy and safe New Year all, and here's
to an abundant 2001.

It's been a great while since I have thought
about our graduating class...so long in fact, I have forgotten most of
the names. Thank you and the others for creating the Cooney website. It
was there where I learned of Scott Haley's death. I was struck by the page
and filled with a sense of dread scrollng through the unfortunate who met
death prematurely. Scott and I weren't exactly good friends, but for a
brief period we worked together and talked about studying geology in college.
Jobs were lined up. He did prevail in his goal, I found another direction.
Despite losing touch with my fellow classmates,
I have found that I still have a closeness with many of them, something
i hadn't realized until seeing the website.
My best to all of you.

Hello Cooney Class of '78:
The web site looks great. I especially
like the page that remembers those who have gone on to be with the Lord
Jesus. For those of you that don't know. In the plane crash that
killed Scott Haley were Renee Fishers parents. Renee Fisher was also
in our graduating class. Her parents, Earl and Louise, were going
for a quick ride with Scott. Scott and Renee have been good friends since
high school and got together as often as their hectic lives allowed.
Scott was also a long time family friend and knew Earl and Louise very
well. Earl and Louise are survived by their seven beautiful children:
Renee, Mark, Susie, Kathy, David, Heidi, and Tammy Joe. They are
all married (most have children) and live in and around the beautiful Oconomowoc
area with the exception of Renee who lives in Alaska. Please keep them
in all in your prayers as this has been a great tragedy.
My love and prayers are with them as well.

years ago this beach, along with many others on this stretch of coast,
were covered with W.W.II material. Just 10 minutes away is the infamous
beach of Dunkirk, France where English soldiers were pushed to the beaches
by German troops and evacuated by anything that could float.

Hey everyone: A thought--it seems to me that
the best way to remember those classmates who have passed on is to remember
them. What do I mean? This message board would be an ideal place for those
among us who have specific memories and incidents of times with Bob Barnick,
Joan Lurvey, Scott Haley, be they funny, profound, whatever, to write up
and share those here with all of us, to help all of us maybe know these
fine people and appreciate more their unique lives and contributions. I
invite all to contribute in this way to memorialize and honor our friends
who have gone on ahead. Thanks!

I can't believe that with all the talent in the
Class of '78 alone, not to mention the thousands of students graduated
annually from OHS, that the International Herald Tribune (the US's leading
news rag overseas) has to publish such an article. The article entitled
' For Better or Verse, U.S. Awash in Poet Laureates' names Wisconsin as
one of 14 states without a poet laureate. Governor Tommy Thompson has named
a committee to review the applications. The article goes on to state
"Meanwhile, a newspaper in Madison printed "state test" for poet laureate.
One question asked nominees to devise a limerick that rhymed with Wisconsin
town names like Oconomowoc and Menominee." So you Cooney grads of '78,
the gauntlet has been dropped! (Click on the image to read the article.)

Hello Everyone,
I couldn't believe all of the tragedies that
had occurred this summer. My prayers go out to all of them and their families.
I guess we just never know when our time is going to come. My husband,
Gary and I are trying to help put an end to the number one cancer threat
to woman, breast cancer. Gary and I belong to the Rock River H.O.G. Chapter,
which for the last 6 years has held a Pledge Ride for Breast Cancer Research.
In the last five years we have raised over $530,000. All money raised at
this event goes to research in Southeast Wisconsin 70% goes to researching
new treatments, 20% toward diagnosis, and 10% toward supporting innovative
concepts or therapies. If there is anyone out there that would like to
help stop this terrible disease, come ride with us on September 30 (even
if you don't ride, you can still come to the after ride party). There is
a minimum pledge of $25 which includes food, bands, door prizes,
a Betty Boop Bandanna, and a surprise poker draw. We also have a live auction,
raffles, and a cash beer and soda tent. Anyone interested can visit Wisconsin
Harley-Davidson at 1225 Robruck Drive in Oconomowoc and pick up your pledge
packet with details. If you can't join us Gary and I, the Rock River
H.O.G. Chapter, Lady Riders Breast Cancer Research Foundation and thousands
of women and men would greatly appreciate it if you would have it in your
heart to sponsor us. You can make your check out to LRBCR Foundation and
mail it to me:
Chris Pernat
N5724Hillside Drive
Sullivan, WI 53178
Any donations need to be received by September 28th, 2000.
I don't know about you guys, but I have already
known way too many women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Did
you know: 1 out of 8 women will get breast cancer, breast cancer is the
leading cause of death for women between 35-54, every 12 minutes a woman
dies of breast cancer (GOD, BLESS JOAN), and 3% of men have breast cancer,
and the statistics are rising. Thank you so much in advance for anyone
who is going to donate a few dollars to help us stop this ugly disease.

After a too-long time of sitting on the shelf
I was finally able over the long holiday weekend to take down the CD "Time
Lines" that Tim Clausen writes of and take a good long listen to it.
And it was time well spent. An artist friend of my once shared his
thoughts that any artist, through their art, must take the participant
on a journey to a place away from where that person actually is, and return
them safely, without the struggle the artist endured to create the passage,
destination, and return passage. This fine music accomplishes this
end. This straight-ahead jazz cooperation between the trio's members
will not be in the mainstream of most music listener's taste and interest,
but it should be heard - and LISTENED to - as representative as some of
the best of this type of music.

I came across this little sentiment and felt
compelled to pass it on.
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine if, we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say "I will call on Jim"
"Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner!- yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir" "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

On the death of a friend, we should consider
that the fates through confidence have devolved on us the task of a double

So our human life but dies down to its root and

Life is too short for all this bullshit that
goes on around us. Please take a moment to think about your actions,
for tomorrow may be too late. Ask yourself "what have I done
today to let someone know that they are special?" "What have I contributed
today to my neighborhood, community or the world?" Don't worry about looking
like a dork. Take the time to say hello. Drop someone you haven't
seen in a long time a short note or e-mail, just to let them know you were
thinking of them. Talk, and actually listen to the stranger sitting
next to you in the waiting room. Go for a walk. Squeeze someone's
hand. Smile and mean it. In the long run, who really cares
how much money you made or what you did for a living or how many weeds
were in your flowerbed?

I awoke this morning to find that one of my best
friends from OHS (Scott Haley) had died. There
were really only two people who would be seen with me those four years
between 1974 and 1978. One was Jerry Rabe and the other was Scott
'Skits' Haley. I knew his family, I was a regular guest in their home,
skied with him behind his boat and spent hours with him at school. At the
20 year reunion, Scott sat with Jerry and me and showed us marvelous photos
of his travels and his planes. Scott had been living a life full
enough for 100 men and loved every minute. I was grateful to him
for the time he shared that night and was hopeful that his travels would
bring him to Luxembourg one day. At the very least, I 'knew' we would
meet again at the 25th. I will miss him very, very much.
To Scott's family I offer my deepest condolences for their loss and hope that Scott has found peace.

a nice several minute conversation and she seemed very peaceful and content
and upbeat and certainly gave no indication (or mention) of health problems.
Joan, then as always, was a very kind, sweet, soft-spoken and humble person,
and she undoubtedly will be missed by many, many people, including her
classmates. This kind of thing always--rightfully--makes me ponder the
meaning of life, the meaning of my life, and what are the quality of my
contributions? One of the finest things I've ever read about all of this
is Max Ehrmann's timeless philosophical statement, The Desiderata, which
reads:
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on
good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly and
listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant they too have their
story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons they
are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may
become vain or bitter, for there will always be greater and lesser persons
than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it's a real possession in the changing fortunes
of time.
Excercise caution in your business affairs, for
the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there
is many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full
of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection. Neither be
cynical about love
for in the face of all arididty and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrenduring the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden
misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with
yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than
the trees and the stars
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you
concieve him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in
the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all it's sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I just love great quotes, this one from my illustrious
ancestor (and 2nd cousin Pat Shaw's too) George Bernard Shaw: "This is
the true joy of life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself
as a mighty one the being a force of nature instead of a feverish
selfish little clod of ailment and grievance complaining that the world
will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my
life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privelage
to do for it what I can. I want to be used up when I die, for the harder
I work the more I live, and I rejoice in life for it's own sake. Life is
no "brief candle" to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got
hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before passing it on to future generations."

Charlie, I appreciate you posting these. Our
latest adventure took a few of us out into the desert to look
for sharks teeth. As you can see we found a few, but the heat
quickly became too much for us and we packed it in (135 that day).
Icluded are a few pictures of the camels
which belong to the Bedouins (who still live in tents and are generally
nomads), but move freely across the desert and they are in NO particular
hurry to do anything. This is truly a different experience from anything
I have ever encountered. The 5 times a day prayer, where everything
shuts down for about half an hour, women must be covered with their Black
Abia's and some have the full face covering (as determined by their husband),
women can not drive and unless they are married to the driver - they can
not sit in the front seat of the car. The people are friendly, but
in a stand offish way - they really do not want to mix the cultures and
maintain a safe distance. We are generally free to travel and move
around with out restriction, but unlike travel in Europe, one always feels
truly "foreign" at all times. My work here is real-world and is therefore
challenging and rewarding. I am currently assigned as the Chief
Intelligence Officer for the U.S. Army Central Command - Saudi Arabia,
mainly responsible for the protection of our forces (Counter-Terrorism
and Counterintelligence). I'll continue to pass photos from future trips/excursions
and I really do enjoy tapping into the HomePage. Can't tell ya how
good it feels to be able to get some news from home - I especially like
the headlines section you do every week pls continue it thanks again

AND a big thanks to Randy Rupnow for this bit
of serendipity: that interesting personality test led to a thorough exploration
of that site and resulted in finding an article called "Abuse it-Lose it",
which details how to productively deal with kids who are disruptive in
class--my son is a real class clown and gets thrown out of class more often
than any of us would like--(wherever did he get THAT from?). The whole
thing makes a tremendous amount of sense, and I forwarded copies to my
ex and to the school counselor. The beauty of the method is that it teaches
kids both self control and self esteem. I was really happy to find this
"answer" to the Nick/school dilemma. Thank you Randy! ALSO-- It was brought
to my attention that there were difficulties ordering that wonderful jazz
piano trio CD I talked about here early in January, the one I got to write
the liner notes for. I'm always ordering up more of these, and the best

Hey Everyone--take a few moments out of your
busy day/life and take a gander at the remarkable company Inc. Magazine
said... "Excel Communications makes famous Inc. 500 alumnus Microsoft look
sluggish by comparison. Microsoft took 15 years to hit the billion dollar
mark, while Excel did it in 8." (And this without benefit of any traditional
advertising. Achieved solely through word of mouth, person to person.)
Money magazine recently said, "Excel Communications is as good an example
of entrepreneurship the world will ever see." Pretty cool stuff! On my
website www.excelir.com/tclausen
click on the Excel Opportunity, then on View Online Presentation. This
company is certainly doing good things for me.

Hello everyone!!! I am so glad Charlie
sent me a reminder to check out our website again!! Well here's my
apology to Jeff Krickhahn and anyone else for whom I ruined Christmas...
Jeff, I am soooo sorry for being such a smarty and telling you in first
grade there was no Santa. Did I ever tell you I was a lier too?
Well, Santa does exist and he still comes to our house. Our daughter,
Tahlia, is 10 and stills believes - at least she goes along with us - she
thinks those who don't are just clueless. Our son, Jansen, is 6 and
has already started his list for next Christmas. Nick and I have
gone through great pains to make sure Santa comes every year-we have separate
Santa wrapping paper, tags and bows that stay hidden in the back of the
closet. We write letters each year and "mail" them to the North Pole
- Santa even sends back a return letter just to let us know he got them.
It's amazing how times have changed - Santa has the greatest fonts and
clipart!!! So J!
eff, I hope you have armed your kids well for
those annoying classmates who insist on ruining it for everyone!
We tell ours that Santa only visits houses of children who believe.
If anything, the idea of more presents will keep them going for a few years
longer! I hope you are all doing well! If you ever make it
to the Dallas area, please look us up - Cris Duchow-Palafox: cristine.palafox@brinker.com

Congratulations Steve on bringing home that new
baby girl. She's quite a sweetheart! Her big sister and brothers looked
pretty proud standing at the gate with the newest addition tothe family.
While I was waiting for my flight to Atlanta I noticed a big crowd of people waiting anxiously at the gate. As the first people off the plane stepped through the gate threshold a big cheer went up. I didn't go to look at what the commotion was about right away, but my curiosity got the best of me. So, I went and stood across the way from the greeting party and just watched. All of a sudden it came to me -- this might be Steve Poe -- and it was.

re: the 2nd grade photo from Greenland School,
Don has pretty much everything right. In row 1 that's my old buddy Eric
Jacobson sandwiched between Jill and Kim. He moved away a year or 2 later.
Stacy Schantz is the mystery girl in row 3 across the way from Missy Reuter.
(I believe it's both Missy and Mitch Hertnecky's (row 2) 40th birthdays
today, 1/19. HB you two.)The guy next to Steve Thurow in row 5 I think
may have been Todd Braunschweig, but not for sure on that one. Speaking
of 2nd grade, I went and found in my childhood scrapbook this hilarious
letter from March 11, 1968 from one Cynthia Lischka. I think it was in
Mrs. Reichardt's class that we exchanged letters with another 2nd grade
class in Watertown, and for some reason I saved this Cynthia's letter,
along with some murky crayoned underwater scene she drew for me on a second
page. Her letter is written on that sand colored, broad lined paper we
used when we were perfecting our spelling and penmanship. It reads: "Dear
Tim, My teacher is Mrs. Bornitzke. Thank you for the letter. We have 30
children in are classroom. My birthday is on February 21, 1968. I like
to paint with paint brush. My singing lady is Miss Decker. I like singing
so must. Are gym techer is Mr. Harris. How old are you. so how old are
you if you no can you tell me soom if your Mothe can't see me. I like gym
so mush. How does your school look. We got are new books the name is Just

Regarding the Greenland School 2nd grade class
picture. Bob Barnick can not be in that picture because my mother, Ann
Grunewald, had him in her class that year, and the teacher in the upper
right hand corner, is not my Mom. The teacher was a substitute for
Mrs. Reichardt that year as she was out that year having a baby. A lot
of the kids look familiar, but I guess only Don and his former 2nd grade
classmates know the real identities.

Hey classmates, I need your help with something.
In order to spend more time with my 11 year old out-of-state son, I began
a telecommunications business last August with Excel Communications. (Excel/Teleglobe
is the 4th largest long distance carrier in North America today, traded
on the NY, Toronto & Montreal exchanges.) I am in need of a couple
more people who would be willing to try my long distance service. We have
a 7 cent a minute, as well as a 3 cent a minute out of state rate (THE
lowest out-of-state rate anywhere.) Details are available on my website
www.excelir.com/tclausen,
where if you like, you can sign up directly. Or email me at trclausen@hotmail.com,
and I'll be happy to email or ring you up with whatever details you want.
Signup is a breeze, and if for any reason you are at all displeased with
your Excel service within the first 90 days, Excel will pay to switch you
back. Many thanks classmates for your help in this (to Betsy P. and Kurt
M. already)! My son Nick and I appreciate it! --Tim Clausen

News Flash---- Mitch Hertnecky recently alerted
me to the fact that Eric Wunrow has recently had a book of his nature photography
published. The book, published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing, is called
MOUNTAINS OF COLORADO, and apparently has text written/cowritten by a former
Colorado governor. Schwartz books here in Milwaukee informs me that you
can order up a copy of this hardcover beauty for 35.00. Any jazz lovers
out there? I recently had the great honor of writing the liner notes to
a superb new jazz piano trio CD called TIMELINES, featuring the late great
Dave Catney on piano. Yours truly has been toiling away for about 5 years
now on a biography of Mr. Catney, and was thrilled to be able to pen the
liner notes for this, his last recording. It's an hours worth of masterful
interpretations of Ellington, etc.. plus a number of ingenious originals
you can get yourself a copy through the bassist/producer's website, which

HAPPY GNU YEAR EVERYONE. Will be hitting the
big 4-0 tonite at midnite, the very moment 2000 rolls in. Let's hope the
world and all of us and all of our working parts continue to function well
in the new century. It's funny in that for several years I'd dreamed about
spending the turn of the century in the tropics on a gorgeous island in
the warm arms of the great love of my life, and instead I'll be seeing
in the new year quite single, playing the piano at a bar/hotel in Mequon,
probably with the same drunk and insistant woman from last new years breathing
stale vodka at me while she demands "play me some Billy Joel" for the 60th
time in 3 hours, while I pray fervently that she won't throw up all over
me or the keyboard until she staggers back over to the bar. But hey, it's

department at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee she humbly describes
herself as the person who comes up with a good suggestion or answer from
time to time for students and faculty issues alike. Yes, I have met many
people like this and they are indispensable to educational institutions
and corporations. Forget the job title, but if you must it would be something
like the University of Wisconsin Theatrical Department Director of Eclectic
Affairs. And if that title is not enough she is a MOM. Am I surprised?
No! I endlessly impressed by so many of my fellow classmates who have aspired
to greatness!"

I was at Bob's funeral and at Winger's afterward
( I know that's hard to believe). Someone told a story about Bob. It goes
something like this. Bob walks into Winger's and says "I'm buying the bar
a round I just won the lottery." (Any time you go into Winger's and buy
the bar around it's going to cost a few bucks). A little while later the
bartender asks Barns "So how much did you win?" Barns says "Two bucks."

Hey Charlie, and all!...The "Feeling Old?" list was great! They had some college freshmen on Leno last night (Jay Walking), and many of them had no idea who was president before Clinton. One of the young ladies didn't even know who Al Gore was. It was hilarious, but kind of scarey. Were we that "uninformed" in '78??? I don't think so! Teach your children well folks. You never know when they might show up on Leno (or whoever takes over for Leno in the coming years)! Wouldn't want anyone caught with their "pants down". BTW...Summerfest was nothing short of outstanding! Went down there a couple of nights. Saw The Bodeans, Hootie, B-52's. Drank too much, ate too much...It was grand!

this little reminder ...
Subject: FEELING OLD?
Just in case you weren't feeling too old today,
this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College
in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of
the mindset of that year's incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list:
1. The people who are starting college this fall
across the nation were born in 1980.
2. They have no meaningful recollection of the
Reagan Era and did not know he had ever been shot.
3. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf
War was waged.
4. Black Monday, 1987 is as significant to them
as the Great Depression.
5. There has been only one Pope. They can only
really remember one (US) president.
6. There were 11 when the Soviet Union broke
apart and do not remember the Cold War.
7. They have never feared a nuclear war. "The
Day After" is a pill to them, not a movie.
8. They are too young to remember the space shuttle
blowing up.
9. Tianamen Square means nothing to them.
10. Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
11. Bottle caps have always been screw off and
plastic.
12. Atari pre-dates them, as do vinyl albums.
13. The expression "you sound like a broken record"
means nothing to them.
14. They have never owned a record player.
15. They have likely never played Pac Man and
have never heard of Pong.
16. Star Wars look very fake to them, and the
special effects are pathetic.
17. There have always been red M&M's and
blue ones are not new. There used to be beige ones?
18. They may have heard of an 8 track, but probably
never have actually seen or heard one.
19. The Compact Disc was introduced when they
were 1 year old.
20. As far as they know, stamps have always cost
about 32 cents.
21. They have always had an answering machine.
22. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13
channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV.
23. They have always had cable.
24. There have always been VCR's, but they have
no idea what BETA is.
25. They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
26. They were born the year that Walkmen were
introduced by Sony.
27. Roller-skating has always meant inline for
them.
28. The Tonight Show has always been with Jay
Leno.
29. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans
were cool.
30. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
31. They have never seen Larry Bird play, and
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a football player.
32. They never took a swim and thought about
Jaws.
33. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to
them as WWI, WWII or even the Civil War.
34. They have no idea that Americans were ever
held hostage in Iran.
35. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses
are.
36. They don't know who Mork was or where he
was from.
37. They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd
walk a mile for a Camel,"or "de plane, de plane!"
38. They do not care who shot J.R. and have no
idea who J.R. is.
39. The Titanic was found? I thought we always
knew where it was.
40. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama
are places, not groups.
41. McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
42. There has always been MTV ...

**THE GUY IN THE BAR
Submitted by iVillager Heidi F. (Resubmitted
by Classmate Barbara Webb to Charlie
Boyer who thought everyone would appreciate it!)
A guy goes into a bar. He's sitting on the stool,
enjoying his drink when he hears, "You look great!"
He looks around--there's nobody near him, so
he just keeps drinking his beer.
A few minutes later, he hears the voice again. "Sharp tie!" it says. The guy looks around again, and again there's nobody around.
After another couple of minutes, he hears, "Is that a new shirt or something? You are absolutely glowing!" He realizes that the voice is coming from a dish of nuts on the bar. "Hey!" the guy calls to the bartender, "What's with the nuts?"
"Oh," the bartender says, "they're complimentary."
